Here are 11 tips I put together to
help your family have a smooth session…

TIPS FOR WHAT TO WEAR:
1. Keep it simplified. Most large/busy patterns (stripes, ribbed, etc), overwhelming accessories, or graphics & logos can be found distracting and won’t photograph well. While all-black or all-white clothes can look flat on even the best dressed, some tips for classic looks would include textured white/plaid/small patterns and other solid colors.

2. Compliment colors. No need to wear all white or one color, but do have a color scheme in mind, and wear complementing colors (so you stand out when next to each other); No need to match each other perfectly, instead, match a shade, or texture, of accessories or layers.

3. Be inspired by your home. Think about where you will be placing your photos and complement that space with the same tones.

4. Layers for variety. Layers bring depth and variety to your photos. Switch out a sweater, or take off the button-down shirt and you have a different look for your photos.

5. Be comfortable. If you know you love your outfit and feel good in it, that will most definitely shine through in your photos! Maybe skip the “trendy” styles that you would regret seeing 10 years from now. Ha! 😅 But remember, the focus is on your connection, not your clothes.

TIPS BEFORE YOUR SESSION:
6. Keep it golden. I prefer to shoot during golden hour…the lighting is the dreamiest!! This is about 90 minutes or so before sunset so if your kiddos need a nap, food, or anything else to ensure they’re feeling themselves, then it may be in your best interest to make that happen before your session.🙂 (And who am I kidding, I will be doing the same for me!)

7. Photos can be fun! I get it…having your photos taken isn’t everyone’s favorite…even I get nervous. But I try my hardest to get everyone relaxed and through it as quickly and easily as possible.

—> Pro Tip: A week ahead of time, tell your kiddos that they’re going to play in the park or discover a new place, with their new friend, “Miss Sarah” who always brings her camera. (Cuz it’s true!😅) Maybe even do a countdown to keep the excitement going!

8. Pups are family. I love dogs and totally agree that they’re family – just let me know if you plan to bring them and what kind of dog you have to help me prep.

—> Pro Tip: Try to have a friend or family member with you to take care of your pup(s) when you’re posing without them and some treats if they’re motivated by food so we can get the most adorable shots of your furry family member(s). 🙂

9. Props. If there’s a favorite toy or special object that will make your child…or hubby, happy throughout the session, by all means, bring it along…it makes for fun photos.

10. Bring it on. If there’s something I can do or say to automatically get a smile and laugh out of your kiddo or teen, let me know! I don’t shy away from potty humor either.😉

11. Relax. Some of my favorite photos are of the kids being kids! I want to capture your genuine family dynamic — and if it means they’re crying, wanting to run, or not wanting to smile at me (who could blame them, looking at you makes them the happiest), I’m not bothered. 😊 So don’t worry, I got you, and you’ll still cherish these photos like any other.
